CalPrivacy Launches Statewide Roadshow to Bring Privacy Tool Directly to Residents

April 21, 2026

SACRAMENTO, CA — The California Privacy Protection Agency (CalPrivacy) is launching a statewide roadshow to bring the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) to communities across California from AprilJune 2026.

What is DROP?

DROP is a free, first-of-its-kind privacy tool from the State of California that allows residents to request their personal information be deleted from every registered data broker in a single request. Before DROP, consumers had no practical way to delete their information from data brokers, which are businesses that sell personal information about consumers with whom they have no direct relationship.

Californians can sign up on privacy.ca.gov/drop in three easy steps: verify California residency through the California Identity Gateway, create a basic profile, and submit a request. Starting August 1, data brokers are legally required to begin processing DROP requests and delete data every 45 days.

Benefits

Data brokers collect a wide range of personal information, which may include sensitive personal information like social security numbers, precise location info, citizenship, and much more. Signing up for DROP enables consumers to request the deletion of personal information held by data brokers.

Deletion of personal information by data brokers could lead to decreased spam and reduced risk of scam texts and emails. It also decreases the risk of identity theft, fraud, AI impersonations, and data leaks and hacks. DROP is funded by data broker registration fees.

Why the roadshow?

Despite growing awareness of data privacy, millions of Californians remain unaware that they have the right to require data brokers to delete their personal information using DROP. The DROP Roadshow is designed to close that gap by meeting residents face-to-face in high-traffic, community-centered environments across every major region of the state.

“Every Californian deserves to know that they have control over their own personal information when it comes to data brokers. The free DROP tool puts the power back in the consumers’ hands by allowing them to delete their information in minutes. This roadshow is about making sure no one is left out of that conversation,” said Tom Kemp, Executive Director of CalPrivacy.
