Half a Million Californians Have Signed up for DROP to Delete their Personal Information from Data Brokers

August 25, 2026

SACRAMENTO, CA — Since launching on January 1, California’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) has crossed a major milestone: More than 500,000 Californians have registered.

Signing up for DROP is quick, easy, and impactful. It’s a one-time process that generally takes less than 10 minutes. Data brokers must delete eligible personal information of the individuals who signed up for DROP or face significant fines.

And the platform is delivering on its promise to Californians. Data brokers have begun matching consumers’ personal information and have already reported deletion of tens of millions of records, with enforcement action possible against brokers who do not comply.

“The Delete Act is working exactly as intended by giving Californians real control over their personal information and holding data brokers accountable,” said Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park), author of the Delete Act. “With over 500,000 Californians now registered for DROP, deletion requests underway, and enforcement kicking in against companies that violate our privacy laws, we’re showing the nation what meaningful consumer privacy protection looks like. The more people who register, the stronger this protection becomes.”

“If you’ve already signed up for DROP, you can log into your profile right now and check your deletion status,” said Tom Kemp, CalPrivacy Executive Director. “And if you haven’t signed up yet, it only takes a few minutes. Visit privacy.ca.gov/DROP to sign up for DROP and also find additional helpful information on how to better protect your personal information.”

DROP isn’t just collecting sign-ups — it’s producing real results

  • 654 data brokers are now part of the system, and since the August 1, 2026 deadline for brokers to begin processing requests, approximately 25% have already reported that they processed deletion requests.
  • 99.9% of consumers have already had their profile deleted by at least one broker, and the typical California DROP user has already had their information removed by over 40 brokers.

What data brokers are deleting

Data brokers buy, sell, and store detailed personal information about millions of Californians — often without people ever knowing.

Before DROP, Californians who wanted their information deleted had to contact each and every data broker individually — a process that could take weeks of work. Now, one free sign-up reaches all registered data brokers at once.

The more information a person shares when signing up, the more likely it is that brokers will be able to match and delete their records. You can learn more about the information you can include in your DROP profile on our website.
